We have traveled extensively throughout the Carolinas and neighboring states since
moving to Charlotte, North Carolina. All of the places we visitited were found online
on various vacation rental or B&B sites. Some were hits, some were misses. It
would have been nice to get some personal recommendations from experienced travellers
to help us avoid the "misses". This thought was really brought home when we bought
our own vacation rental (see Above the River below) and I started advertising it
on various sites. I felt that the ads for some of the other places really misrepresented
what people would actually be getting. I had been burned by this type of ad both
when renting and when viewing a house that was for sale - I guess everyone has.
With that in mind, I decided to set up a page that would allow me to recommend places
in which I have personally stayed and about which I felt strongly. It would
have to be not just a nice place, but at a good value in an interesting location.
Below are the favorite places - so far. Certainly I would consider them to be "VacationWorthy".
I hope to be adding to this list as time goes by and would consider exchanges if
you have an interesting place!

Above the River: A Blue Ridge Mountain Cabin on the New River in Ashe County, North Carolina
This Beautiful cabin is in the Blue Ridge Mountains overlooking a particularly beautiful
section of the New River. It has 3 bedrooms and 3 baths, sleeps 8, and has a fireplace,
hot tub and family room with game table. It is just a short walk to the river and
the cabin is surrounded by hiking trails. It sits in a serene, wooded setting which
makes you feel like you are vacationing in a park! The cabin is just a few minutes
from downtown West Jefferson, Glendale Springs and the Blue Ridge Parkway and 30
minutes from Boone.
We so fell in love with this place that we bought it!

Egret on
the Sound: Outer Banks, North Carolina
Michelle did such a good job of capturing the essance of her place that I will just
plagerize her site! - Egret is a 1 bedroom, 1 bath cottage (sleeps 4) sitting
directly on the Albemarle Sound in North Carolina. It is a waterfront vacation rental
without the high rental cost of waterfront at the beach. The cottage rental is sound
side, with 8 miles between the water’s edge and the far side of the sound. The location
is quiet and serene, where you’ll hear the sounds of wildlife and the water lapping
against the shore rather than sounds of traffic. Egret is one of only 4 cottages
on the point at Lasseters Landing. It far away from the crowds, but close enough
to everything if you want a day’s outing.

Suzanne's Seaside Cottage: Wild Dunes (Charleston Area), South Carolina
Wild Dunes is a gated resort on the Isle of Palms, a barrier island just 15 minutes
north of Charleston. It is the perfect location to be able enjoy the beach by day
and hop over to Charleston for dinner. I think we may have been one for the first
people to enjoy Suzanne's place after she remodeled it. It is a beautiful 3 bedroom,
2.5 bath cottage, located just across the street from the beach access path and
only a short walk to the community pool. The screened porch, overlooking a lagoon,
is a perfect place to relax in the evenings. The hammock in the shade by the master
bedroom is my choice for a nice nap! We loved this place! By the way, the pictures
on her site do not do it justice.

The Azalea Inn - Savannah, Georgia
The Azalea Inn is right on the edge of the historic district, by Forsythe Park.
We parked the car there and just walked during our trip to Savannah. The Inn was
beautifully decorated (as the pictures attest) and made us feel like we had stepped
back in time. We were well taken care of by the innkeepers. The picture here of
the porch reminds me of the time when came back from one of our long walks and my
wife fell asleep in her chair while I went to get her some lemonade.
If you plan to go to Savannah, give the Azalea Inn a try, you will get a wonderful
inn at a more reasonable rate than something closer in.

Phillips-Yates-Snowden House: Charleston, South Carolina
Jack and Annelise Simmons have a wonderful house very nicely located in the Battery
section of Charleston. We enjoyed our stay in their bed and breakfast immensely
and are looking forward to the time when we come back. As is the case for most B&Bs
(at least from our perspective), the innkeepers make or break the trip. The Simmons
definately "made" the trip for use making us feel very welcome, suggesting excellent
dining options and filling us in about many of the comings and goings of Charleston
that one would normally not pick up as a tourist. We have been to countless places
in the Charleston area and this definately was a highlight.

Mountain
Song Inn: Floyd, Virginia
From the moment we parked our car and saw the expansive view of mountains from this
property, we know we were in for a nice stay. The inn is convenient to a very beautiful
section of the Blue Ridge Parkway and to the quaint country town of Floyd, which
is a must see. This part of Virginia just says "relaxation" and it allowed us to
forget about our hectic lives in the city, if only for a few days. The innkeepers,
Dan and Tanya DuRant, opened their home to us and really made us feel
welcome. The breakfasts that Tanya made were also very memorable. This trip to the
mountains had such an effect on us that the started looking for our own place shortly
after this trip.
